Live from Tbilisi (May 13). Holding the night

In photos and videos, continuation and not end of the mobilization against the proposed “Russian law” in Georgia. On the night of May 12 to 13, 2024, youth held a “watch picket” around Parliament. The bill will undoubtedly be adopted this Tuesday May 14, but mass has not yet been said.

The young Georgian Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, and his mentor, the pro-Russian oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili, consider themselves the new geniuses of the Carpathians (except that Georgia is the Caucasus more than the Carpathians). Until the end, they will persist in promulgating a “Russian law” contested by a majority of the population, particularly by young people. Obviously: according to Irakli Kobakhidze, who claims to base himself on a “scientific study”, his opponents have an IQ “below average”. The worrying authoritarian drift of the Georgian Dream party, initially classified as center-left, can be explained by the prospect of the next legislative elections, next October, which it fears losing. The law on "foreign agents", revoked for the first time last year, aims to establish provisions which will make it possible, following Putin's model, to muzzle independent media, NGOs and associations, and opposition parties. As Putin showed in Russia, "electoral" victory is much easier when oppositions are harassed or banned, even "poisoned". To achieve such ends, the aptly named “Georgian Dream” is ready to renounce its European commitments, even though they are enshrined in the Georgian constitution. This Monday, May 13 in the early morning, despite a huge demonstration in Tbilisi on Sunday, May 12 and a night of vigil around the Parliament, the legal committee of the Georgian parliament approved the third reading of the draft "Russian law" in less than one minute and while opposition MPs were prevented from entering Parliament. A final plenary session will take place this Tuesday, May 14. There is no doubt that the government will continue its stubbornness. The protest continues with the prospect of a general strike, which begins this Monday in most universities in the country. This youth has no desire to “become Russian”; her dream is a dream of Europe and democracy. To what extent can a power be despised and sent back into the limbo of a suffocated desire? / Jean-Marc Adolphe

At 8:15 a.m. (in Georgia), the legal committee of the Georgian Parliament has just adopted the draft “Russian law” in third reading.

The “session” lasted less than a minute! And opposition MPs were prevented from entering parliament. Never seen before in the history of Georgia!

Final step: the “Russian law” will be examined in plenary session this Tuesday, May 14.
